Learning to Hold Both: Embracing Life’s Duality for Healing and Growth
We can't favor one experience or emotion over the other; it's both.
There’s no power quite like learning to hold all of life’s duality because it allows us to heal, grow, and experience the richness of expansive states.
In this week’s podcast episode, we’re diving into the complex topic of holding messy, seemingly contradictory emotions and experiences at the same time because learning to do so is what allows us to create more of what we deeply desire: true joy, deep love, and powerful purpose. When we don’t let both sides be present, we’re favoring one over the other, and it’s often the emotion that’s easier and more pleasant to deal with. This makes it hard for us to be truly present for all of life, and to heal through the contractive states so that we’re really able to feel all that’s good and beautiful.
I’m sharing a couple of instances from my own journey, including learning to hold grief and gratitude and navigating the confusion of an abusive partner who also had good aspects of personality and kind ways of being. Learning to hold both can be challenging when people around us can’t, but that doesn’t make it wrong. It gives us another layer of leverage in ourselves to create what we really want.
“Every time I feel gratitude for what I know, where I am, who I get to meet and be in relationship with, and what’s been birthed in my work and business, I feel grief. I feel grief because he’s not here, and he died. And I feel grief for the person that I was, the business that I had, the relationships that I had, the life that I was living, all of which stopped existing when he made the choice to leave. It’s both.”
