A Year of Unexpected Milestones
Lessons from learning to advocate for yourself inside a system that doesn't care about your needs.
This year has been a year with milestones unlike any other.
Instead of racking up adventure miles and new experiences, launching new programs, and breaking my record for the number of times I’ve guested on other podcasts, I spent this year heavily (and involuntarily) focused on healing my body. I achieved entirely new milestones that I definitely didn’t have on my goal list for 2023.
18 days of hemorrhaging and a few months of severe anemia.
Two rounds of iron infusions, two surgeries, and now two blood clots.
A maxed-out insurance deductible, several prescriptions, and supplements galore.
One far-too-busy heart, a thrown-out back, and ongoing symptoms of iron deficiency.
An urgent care visit, two trips to the emergency room, and a lot of fancy tests.
More calls to doctors, medical facilities, and insurance than I could possibly count.
This year humbled me and taught me how to ask for and receive support at even deeper levels than I set out to master the year before.
